NanoAI welcomes George Giannakopoulos who will present his work, titled “Co-creating an AI-enabled software infrastructure to empower Natural Sciences in NCSR “Demokritos””.

Description: In this presentation we will set the foundations of an endeavor to create a horizontally applicable software infrastructure, which aims to empower scientific research with and beyond NCSR “Demokritos”. The discussion means to illustrate the need, determine the main requirements of such a system, gather suggestions for use cases and set an indicative roadmap of implementation. The workshop is critical in identifying interest regarding this potential and its applicability to various scientific settings.

Dr George Giannakopoulos is an Artificial Intelligence (AI) researcher (Special Functional Scientist Grade B) at “SKEL: The AI lab” of the Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications of NCSR “Demokritos”, as well as co-founder and CEO of SciFY, a not-for-profit AI organization bringing AI results to society. He has more than 15 years of AI-related experience on EU-funded, but also industrial projects. He brings more than 20 years of IT consulting and software engineering expertise in domains such as AI and Natural Language Processing,Bio-medical informatics, AI for Natural Sciences and more. He has contributed to numerous multi-disciplinary projects and supervised several BSc and MSc theses in the interface of AI with the Natural Sciences. He is also the Scientific Officer of the ahedd Digital Innovation Hub (DIH) of NCSR “Demokritos”.  He is a member of the Hellenic Artificial Intelligence Society (EETN) and a member of the European Chapter of the Association of Computational Linguistics (ACL). He has contributed to the design and implementation of several MSc programmes (MSc in AI, MSc in Data Science, MSc Quantum Computing & Quantum Technologies, MSc in Cognitive Science), to national policy-making initiatives through the Sectorial Scientific Council on Data Policy and A.I. of the National Council for Research, Technology and Innovation (2021-2022) but also to the Greek National Strategy on AI, as well as to several national and international working groups on Data Policy, AI and Social Innovation. George has co-authored more than 90 scientific publications with more than 1300 citations. He also authored the first Greek book on AI that addresses non-expert and expert audiences alike, under the title “AI: a subtle demystification” in 2021.
